DIRECTV Genie Frequently Asked Questions
Genie only records 5 shows at once. DISH Network claims Hopper can record up to 6. Is that true?
The Hopper from DISH Network actually only has three tuners, so outside of Primetime hours you can only record 3 shows at once. They are able to say that they can record six shows at once because of their Primetime Anytime feature, but even with that they are forcing you to record the channels they want you to record. Genie is better because it gives you the freedom and power to record any five shows you want at once, anytime you want, all in HD.
Is DISH Network's Hopper compatible with RVU-TVs and game consoles?
No, only DIRECTV's Genie is RVU-enabled. Genie works with RVU-TVs and game consoles, enabling you to enjoy total receiver-less TV. If you are unfamiliar with RVU, visit our RVU page [link to RVU Page] to see how RVU-TVs work with DIRECTV.
What is meant by Clients in the description of the Genie?
Clients are devices that can be seamlessly connected to the Genie, the best HD DVR from DIRECTV yet. The clients can be DIRECTV clients or other devices such as RVU-enabled TVs, Blu-ray players and gaming consoles.
What is RVU and how does it work?
RVU, a software technology, is built into the Genie and enables it to act as a server for smaller Clients (DIRECTV clients, Blu-ray players, gaming consoles, Smart TVs, etc.). RVU allows clients to access all live and recorded content from the Genie, as well as broadband internet based services and User Interface features. Visit our RVU page [link to RVU Page] to learn more about RVU technology.
What do the clients do?
Clients do not contain tuners of their own, and connect to the Genie to access programming. One client is needed for each additional TV unless the TV is RVU enabled (a Smart TV).
Can I use a client without the Genie?
Because clients do not have tuners themselves, they cannot be used without the Genie. They must be connected to the Genie in order to access its programming, recorded content, and DVR. One client is needed for each TV unless the TV is a Smart TV (RVU enabled).
How many TVs does the DIRECTV Genie provide for?
The Genie can be connected in up to 8 rooms, bringing DIRECTV programming and full DVR capabilities to each connected TV.
How many shows can I watch and record at one time?

Yes. In any room with a client, you can pause, play and rewind live TV with the DIRECTV Genie.
Can all of the TVs connected to the Genie record shows?
You can schedule to record a show on the Genie from any of the connected TVs. DIRECTV clients have full and independent DVR capabilities. You will not be able to record content from a connected HD receiver.
Can the Genie system be combined with other DIRECTV HD DVRs and receivers?
Yes, the Genie will work with any other DIRECTV HD DVRs and HD receivers that are compatible with the Whole-Home DIVR service, allowing you to play, pause, rewind and delete recorded content on the Genie from any room in the house. Note: You will not be able to record content to the Genie from a connected HD Receiver or HD DVR.
Can I get On Demand programming with the clients?
If the Genie is connected to the Internet, you can access On Demand programming via the clients.

How many hours of programming does the Genie hold?
The Genie, with a 1TB (one terabyte) hard drive, holds up to 800 hours of standard-definition programming or 200 hours of HD programming. Actual recording capacity varies, based on the types of programs being recorded.
